Module 10.1 / Begin the design record

Need, Scope & Verifiable Specification

A working radio demonstration is a beginning. Define the service, expose the assumptions and decide what evidence you need before the product becomes expensive to change.

01 / 10

A radio selected before the problem is bounded

Which missing fact could invalidate the radio you have already selected?

A condition-monitoring node sends a message to a gateway across the workshop. The reference board is inexpensive, the software example runs, and everyone can see the received value. The customer then asks for “100 m everywhere,” a multi-year battery, simultaneous gateway backhaul and updates without a service visit. Installation adds a metal bracket behind the enclosure.

That demonstration establishes a narrow fact in this fictional story: one setup delivered something. It does not establish a service envelope. The metal can change antenna currents and the installed pattern. Backhaul transmission can disturb the receiver. A long search or update state can dominate energy even when the average telemetry traffic looks small. These are possible changes to the product architecture, not missing decimal places in a radio datasheet.

Illustrative case · three candidate directions, no selection yet

Candidate directions before the need is bounded
DirectionWhat could invalidate it?
Generic 2.4 GHz node + local gatewayInstalled antenna or concurrent-reception envelope cannot meet the service.
Separate sub-GHz variantNamed territory/mode feasibility or antenna volume changes the product scope.
Different radio/infrastructure optionSearch energy, provisioning or endpoint latency changes the service boundary.

No vendor, air interface or legally permitted mode is selected. The portfolio signal remains generic 2.450 GHz QPSK; the board is an illustrative design-framing variant.

Build on 05.1’s conditional RF requirements, 07.7’s coexistence and technology comparison, and 09.2’s configuration/market coverage. Here you will turn their open questions into an owned proof plan. Detailed architecture follows in 10.2; jurisdiction decisions remain in Path 09.

Decision and record updateOpen p10-m01-record-v1 in record family p10-design-record-v1. Retain F-DEMO-v1 as an illustrative observation and keep radio choice provisional. Record N-RANGE through N-MARKET before choosing what the demonstration is meant to prove.
02 / 10

Observe the service the radio must deliver

What does the maintenance technician need to receive—and when?

Start at the sensor event, not the RF carrier. The sensor acquires a condition value, firmware creates a payload and records its transmit request at node D0. The radio transports a representation of that payload. The gateway makes receiver decisions at R3, reconstructs the message, and presents the complete payload at gateway D0. A technician can act only when the service exposes the information where it is needed.

Here the proposed endpoint is the gateway application. The site owner supplies power, installation access and upstream networking; remote cloud delivery is outside this local deadline. That boundary requires a customer conversation: if the actual need is a remote alarm during a backhaul outage, a gateway receipt is insufficient even when every RF requirement is met. NASA’s stakeholder and operating-context discussion supports establishing this context before allocating requirements.

SERVICE-FR-v1 · bounded operating concept
Service factProposed envelope / consequence
User and installationTechnician installs a stationary dry node; site maintenance owns mounting and battery replacement. Wet/mobile use needs a new variant.
Traffic and deadline1000 unique 32-byte payloads; requests each 60 s; one retry maximum at +200 ms; complete gateway D0 receipt by 1 s inclusive.
Outage and accountingMissing, late and ambiguous observations remain failures in the generated-message denominator. A network outage does not erase requests.
Maintenance and infrastructure24-month illustrative replacement profile; monthly update allowance; gateway power and external backhaul ownership explicit.
Think about itA plastic-mounted node and a metal-mounted node both stand 100 m from the gateway. Is the requirement the same?
Answer

Distance alone is unchanged, but the antenna boundary is different. C-NOM fixes plastic mounting; C-METAL adds a named plate and spacing. A successful C-NOM sequence cannot cover C-METAL without a scoped S0 comparison and review. The required service may be identical; the evidence needed to support it is different.

Decision and record updateRecord SERVICE-FR-v1 and the D0 endpoint. Ask the site owner whether local delivery is enough during upstream outages. Keep that validation question separate from verifying the 1000-message exercise.

Draw the system boundary and interfaces

A system boundary is a responsibility boundary. At the transceiver package, the RF lead can specify a port condition. At the antenna feed, feed loss and mismatch have intervened. In the installed geometry, the antenna, enclosure, mounting and environment affect what reaches the other device. Moving the reference plane changes which effects are inside the question.

From application need to application observationD0 request leads through R1 component RF port, R2 product antenna feed and S0 installed OTA geometry to receiver RF input, R3 detector/decision and D0 receipt. Supply and control are separate local boundaries; R3 is not receiver RF input.D0 requestApplicationR1Component portR2Antenna feedS0OTA geometryR3 → D0Decision → dataReceiver RF input is upstream of R3P0-SUPPLY: whole-node power · CTRL: request / grant50 Ω only at explicitly declared RF ports
Conceptual boundary map, not a propagation simulation. The receiving product also has its own R2 feed and R1 RF port before R3.

The supply interface carries a different contract: voltage range, load-step response, cutoff, connector and owner. A control interface needs request/grant meanings and timing. Neither needs a fabricated dBm value, and neither inherits a 50 Ω RF reference. A complete contract marks inapplicable dimensions with a reason while keeping unresolved physical allocations visible.

Common misconceptionEveryone understands the supply, so it does not need an owner.

RF may observe a reset during transmit, firmware may report a missed grant, and power engineering may see acceptable average current. Without one accountable interface owner, those observations can remain disconnected. Name the role that reconciles peak load, voltage, timing and the radio state.

Decision and record updateRetain I-RF, I-SUPPLY and I-CONTROL. I-SUPPLY is deliberately unowned in the incomplete brief; adding the power systems lead repairs that group only. It does not repair battery-life evidence.

Enumerate configurations before reducing tests

Which modes actually exist together?

“Supports telemetry, backhaul and updates” can describe three separate modes or simultaneous operation. Those are different products from the receiver’s point of view. A gateway transmitter may be silent in nominal reception and active in C-CONC. An update may suspend normal telemetry. A metal mount changes the physical configuration even when firmware and traffic remain fixed.

CP-METAL-v1

No Cartesian combination is implied. Region/frequency permission, part ratings and actual implementation remain unresolved.

The local N01-FR/G02-FR sample pair derives from the earlier node and gateway story. It has explicit new framing manifests; it is not a replacement for Path 09’s inventory. Hardware/BOM/stackup, firmware, antenna, feed, supply, enclosure and sample identity stay together. A changed firmware gets a new manifest, so an old review can remain historically correct while becoming inapplicable to the new claim.

For Switzerland, OFCOM’s conditions page names conformity and documentation obligations. EU RED documentation context and US §2.947 measurement scope are different source questions. They do not establish a universal radio limit. GB and Canadian applicability stay with their Path 09 territory records; this lesson selects no legal operating mode.

Decision and record updateRecord four explicit configuration IDs. R-MARKET’s repaired proposal names five territory questions and an owner; actual applicability remains open under U-MARKET. Do not authorize C-METAL × C-CONC merely because each state has a name.

Write requirements that admit an observation

To make a requirement verifiable, imagine the observer disagreeing with the designer. What exactly would they count, at which boundary, in which configuration, over what interval? A number becomes useful only when that disagreement can be resolved by an agreed observation. NASA’s Appendix C/D provides informative guidance on traceability and planning a verification approach.

Subject + scope + quantity + criterion + conditions + methodA local requirement grammar. No automated extraction from arbitrary customer prose is claimed.

Illustrative case · range becomes a finite service criterion

For C-NOM in CP-NOM-v1 at 100 m, the node/gateway shall deliver at least 990 of the 1000 specified 32-byte payloads at gateway D0 within 1 s of each recorded request. The retry/interval and counting rules remain SERVICE-FR-v1. Missing or late messages fail; they do not disappear from the denominator.

R-LIFE needs a different statistic and proof. Its 24 months mean 730 days under LIFE-FR-v1, including a versioned update/retry/sleep profile and a chosen usable-capacity assumption. The initial plan combines an energy model with current-profile and capacity evidence. Writing a 24-month target supplies no accelerated-life equivalence. R-UPDATE separately tracks image transfer, image identity and recovery; a complete transfer at 90 s with no valid heartbeat by 120 s does not meet its proposed service criterion.

Think about itAt the same supply state, can ≥80 mA and ≤60 mA both be satisfied? What if one is update mode and the other nominal mode?
Answer

The identical-condition constraints have an empty intersection. Separating them into disjoint C-UPD and C-NOM removes that mathematical contradiction in this bounded fixture. Equality at 80/80 leaves one permitted value, but no tolerance or feasibility proof. Missing a condition profile leaves comparison unresolved.

Give facts and unknowns different jobs

A fact describes what was observed, with its scope. An assumption fills a gap so a model can be explored. A derived estimate follows from inputs and a model. A hard constraint limits the design space; a preference orders acceptable choices. An open question names what is not yet known. A reviewed decision states what someone concluded from a particular body of evidence. These jobs cannot be exchanged just by changing a status label.

8 · proof-plan reviewEnergy/market/downstream packets keep exact restrictions and next evidence.Ready for discussion can coexist with unresolved implementation.

In a real project, the observation would identify the actual specimen, instrument/settings, acquisition, raw data and uncertainty. This exercise supplies no such measurements or signatures. Its packets are fictional review premises. When C-CONC changes to firmware v2, its v1 packet does not mutate; the proposed new use becomes incompatible until reconciled.

Go deeperCompleteness, maturity and compatibility are independent

A fully populated report may still be out of scope. A compatible simulation may still have insufficient maturity for hardware verification. A complete proposed test plan may be useful while no observation exists. Keep these as separate record dimensions so a document’s neatness cannot conceal its evidential limits.

Decision and record updateKeep parent IDs and historical versions. Create a new derived record and review when evidence arrives; do not turn the original assumption into a past measurement. Preserve separate technical result, review state and next experiment.

Find the unknowns that can force redesign

Which unknown can make a decision expensive to reverse?

Mounting can change the antenna and enclosure. Concurrent operation can change filtering, isolation or the front end. Current peaks and state durations can change the power architecture. A territory/mode finding can change the product variants. Each is a causal path from uncertainty to a design commitment. Naming those paths is more useful than inventing a probability that the available evidence cannot support.

The local consequence tiers are architecture, scope and implementation. Uncertainty is high, medium or low. These are ordinal discussion classes, not measured probabilities or standard FMEA numbers. Multiplying their labels by effort would create apparent precision without a quantitative model. Instead, use the stated ordering and retain dissent about priorities.

Common misconceptionEnough margin can absorb the unknowns.

A dB reserve cannot supply a missing mounting geometry, settle an unselected national mode or define the customer’s outage behavior. Margin can address an explicitly modeled variation; it cannot transform an undefined service into a verified one.

Decision and record updateRecord U-MOUNT, U-CONC, U-ENERGY, U-MARKET and U-LINE as the complete fixture question set. Preserve antenna/front-end options, and restrict battery, region/frequency and stackup commitments until their stated proof dispositions permit review.

Design proof while the design is still cheap to change

Plan proof while the design still has test access and reversible choices. R-RANGE needs a D0 observation sequence under S0 conditions; R-LIFE needs current and capacity evidence at the whole-node supply boundary; I-CONTROL needs request/grant and recovery correlation. A single “RF test passed” field cannot represent these different observations.

Uncertainty is part of the observation model. For this local timing exercise, count a payload as timely only if its recorded latency plus the declared expanded timing uncertainty is within the deadline. A 999 ms timestamp with U=1 ms meets the inclusive bound; 1000 ms with U=1 ms does not establish it under this conservative count rule. This is a chosen teaching rule, not a radio-standard test. NIST TN1297 §5 explains why the measurement model and its contributing uncertainties matter.

Verification asks whether the specified behavior was achieved. Validating the service asks whether that behavior solves the maintenance problem. The product could meet the gateway D0 criterion yet fail the customer during a remote backhaul outage. A site walkthrough and stakeholder service demonstration can expose that mismatch before another RF measurement is commissioned.

Illustrative case · do not generalize one sample

A finite 1000-message test evaluates one declared sequence on one illustrative sample pair. A population statement needs a population, sampling strategy and statistical procedure, with dependence and installation variation considered. A manufacturing screen and formal compliance evaluation have their own scopes. No count in this board silently becomes any of those claims.

Decision and record updateAttach method, sample/window, plane, uncertainty/decision rule and owner to every requirement. Record the service validation question beside the RF verification plan. Keep all six technical results “awaiting verification.”

Choose the next discriminating experiment

Why can the cheapest available test be the wrong next test?

A coupon can characterize a selected transmission-line stackup class for one effort unit. But mounting and concurrency may change the architecture and therefore the class worth characterizing. Its cost does not make it eligible. First retire U-MOUNT and U-CONC with compatible, conclusive, current scoped review packets. Merely scheduling or executing the tests leaves the prerequisite questions open.

Think about itE-COUPON costs 1 unit; E-CONC and E-MOUNT each cost 2. Which comes first, and how is their tie resolved?
Answer

E-COUPON is blocked by both architecture questions. Among eligible experiments, consequence precedes uncertainty, then known positive effort, then stable ID. E-CONC and E-MOUNT tie on the first three dimensions, so E-CONC comes first alphabetically. This deterministic tie-break is not evidence that concurrency is physically more important.

Evidence prerequisites, not a scheduleBoth architecture questions must be retired before the selected-stackup coupon becomes eligible. Plans, execution and inconclusive packets do not satisfy these edges.E-CONC → U-CONCPrerequisite question openE-MOUNT → U-MOUNTPrerequisite question openE-COUPON → U-LINEBlocked; both reviews required

No independent stackup release.

The canonical order is E-CONC → E-MOUNT → E-ENERGY → E-MARKET. After E-CONC alone, E-MOUNT still blocks the coupon. After both compatible conclusive packets, the remaining order is E-ENERGY → E-MARKET → E-COUPON. An inconclusive or stale concurrency packet leaves U-CONC open. An unknown cost stays unranked and visible; it never becomes zero.

Illustrative case · two concurrency outcomes

Inconclusive: a controlled comparison is executed, but its timing or mechanism cannot support the proposed envelope. Keep U-CONC open, preserve front-end alternatives and plan a better controlled repeat. Supports the envelope: the supplied fictional packet establishes a scoped review of C-CONC-v1. It retires that prerequisite question for the coupon. Neither outcome changes market or mounting status, and neither verifies R-CONC’s future technical requirement.

Go deeperOne defensible alternative proof order

If a product owner makes territory feasibility a hard prerequisite to any RF architecture spending, perform E-MARKET first, then E-CONC and E-MOUNT. State the different priority: product-scope feasibility before architecture retirement. Record that commitment stop explicitly. This is a justified alternative review plan, not the output of the canonical ordinal sort; cost cannot override the stop.

Decision and record updateRecord E-CONC and E-MOUNT as the exact first two canonical experiments, with owners, controls and alternative outcomes. Keep the planned coupon downstream. Review restrictions independently of rank.

Defend the framing baseline

A framing review should make it easy to challenge the proposal. The reviewer needs to see what is missing, which constraints truly conflict, which question a packet addresses, and what commitment remains restricted. A broad “done” flag would hide precisely the distinctions that protect the design.

  1. Inspect the four canonical groups: R-RANGE, R-LIFE, R-MARKET and I-SUPPLY.
  2. Supply only I-SUPPLY’s owner and compare: three requirement groups remain.
  3. Apply the complete R-RANGE proposal and compare: R-LIFE and R-MARKET remain.
  4. Compare same-scope, equality and disjoint current bounds. Keep the scopes visible.
  5. Reset; predict the tied experiment order. Apply E-CONC alone, then E-MOUNT. Inspect the remaining framing gaps.
  6. Select repaired framing. It replaces all custom changes with six complete proposals and five exact dispositions. Inspect ready-for-review, future verification and active restrictions, then reset.

Model framing-review memo · supplied exercise answer

To: architecture review participants. From: fictional systems framing lead. Snapshot: p10-m01-record-v1; synthetic review horizon: 2026-09-08, event 10.

We propose the local N01-FR/G02-FR service envelope, with 1000-message D0 criteria and four explicit configurations. The six requirements are complete proposals. I-SUPPLY now has an accountable power systems lead. None of the six has been technically verified.

Our initial proof order is E-CONC then E-MOUNT, tied architecture/high/2-unit experiments resolved by stable ID. Inconclusive concurrency evidence leaves the front end open; compatible scoped evidence supports only C-CONC-v1. Mounting evidence similarly addresses only its named plate/spacing envelope. Both compatible supplied review premises are present in this repaired snapshot.

U-ENERGY retains the reviewed LIFE-FR-v1 current/capacity proof plan and a battery/architecture restriction. U-MARKET names EU-DE/CH/GB/US/CA variants and the Path 09 applicability lead; region/frequency commitment is restricted. U-LINE remains downstream in 10.2/10.3 with no stackup release. The package is ready for a framing discussion, not stakeholder approval or product acceptance.

A defensible alternative begins with E-MARKET if territory feasibility is made a mandatory scope prerequisite; record that changed priority. Architecture must now resolve front-end alternatives, feed-loss allocation, battery evidence, selected stackup class and real radio/mode applicability. Any change to a packet’s manifest requires applicability reconciliation while preserving the historical packet.

Decision and record updateBaseline p10-m01-record-v1 as an illustrative framing snapshot linked to teaching-node-v1, NEED-08, C-MARKET, p09-m02-configuration-register-v1, SYN-P09-M01-MANIFEST-v1. Carry the bounded service, proposed contracts, proof order and restrictions into architecture discussion. A changed configuration receives new identity and review; raw historical evidence stays intact.

Check your understanding

Answer each question in your own words, then reveal the model answer.

  1. 01What must replace “100 m everywhere” before it can be observed?
    Model answer

A named installation/geometry, configuration, traffic sequence, D0 success definition, time window and method. Here C-NOM requires at least 990 of 1000 unique 32-byte payloads within 1 s at the stated S0 geometry. Metal mounting is C-METAL and needs its own plan. Passing one finite sequence cannot establish every site or population reliability.

  2. 02Why do D0 delivery and S0 measurements answer different questions?
    Model answer

S0 describes the radiated geometry, polarization and field/antenna behavior. D0 counts complete application payloads and deadlines, including queues and retries. A good radiated result can coexist with late firmware delivery; a short D0 success run cannot identify antenna efficiency. Preserve both planes and correlate the evidence.

  3. 03When the current-profile evidence arrives, what happens to the capacity assumption?
    Model answer

Keep A-CAPACITY-v1 as the original assumption. Add the actual new raw record, manifest, acquisition order and uncertainty, then a derived estimate and a new scoped decision linked to that origin. A current profile alone cannot prove usable capacity or aging; U-ENERGY remains restricted until its full proof plan is addressed.

  4. 04Are ≥80 mA and ≤60 mA always contradictory?
    Model answer

Only in a comparable intersecting scope: same current statistic, units or supported conversion, P0-SUPPLY plane, interval and exact condition profile. There the permitted interval is empty. In disjoint C-UPD and C-NOM there is no cross-mode constraint. At 80/80 the closed interval contains exactly 80 mA, but physical tolerance still needs review.

  5. 05Why is the one-effort-unit coupon not the first experiment?
    Model answer

E-COUPON characterizes a selected stackup class. U-MOUNT or U-CONC may change that architecture, so both compatible conclusive reviews are prerequisites. E-CONC alone leaves E-MOUNT blocking; an executed but inconclusive packet leaves U-CONC open. Spending less cannot make inapplicable evidence answer the blocking question.

  6. 06What does “ready for framing review” establish about the product?
    Model answer

Only that the bounded proposal, interface ownership, consistency and five question dispositions satisfy the local exercise rules. All six technical requirements still await verification. Battery, region/frequency and stackup commitments remain restricted; a human review, production screening and formal compliance are separate decisions.
